When Cleaning Is No Longer Enough
Regular cleaning keeps a pool filter working well for a long time, but filter media does not last forever. Cartridge pleats tear and lose their shape, DE grids crack, and sand wears smooth so it no longer traps fine particles. At some point, a worn filter cannot keep the water clear no matter how often it is cleaned.
Filter tanks themselves can also crack, leak or develop failing valves and seals. When that happens, replacing the media or the entire filter is often the most reliable way to restore clean water and protect your pump. A filter that is matched to your pool and pump also helps the rest of the system run efficiently and keeps cleaning intervals reasonable.
Signs Your Filter Needs Replacing
Consider filter replacement if you notice:
- Cloudy water that returns soon after cleaning
- Torn, flattened or crumbling cartridge pleats
- Cracked or collapsed DE grids
- Sand or DE returning to the pool
- Pressure that rises very quickly after cleaning
- Leaks or cracks in the filter tank
- A multiport valve that no longer seals
Choosing the Right Replacement
Sometimes only the cartridges, grids or sand need to be replaced. In other cases, an older or damaged tank makes a full filter replacement the better choice. We look at the condition of the whole filter and explain the options so you can decide.
When a new filter is needed, we help you choose a type and size that suits your pool and your pump, then install it, restart the system and check the pressure. Our 20 years of experience helps make sure the new filter is matched to your equipment and set up correctly.
Filter Replacement Questions
How long do filter cartridges last?
Lifespan varies with pool use, water chemistry and how often the cartridges are cleaned. We check their condition during cleanings and let you know when they are wearing out.
Can I switch to a different type of filter?
Often yes. We can explain the differences between cartridge, sand and DE filters and what would work with your system.
