Pool Care Tips

Signs Your Pool Pump Is Failing

The pump is the heart of your pool. These warning signs mean it needs attention before a small problem becomes a breakdown.

Your pump moves water through the filter, heater and sanitizer every day. When it struggles, the whole pool suffers: water gets cloudy, chlorine stops reaching every corner and algae gets a foothold. Catching pump trouble early usually means a simpler repair.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Strange noises. A screeching or grinding sound often points to worn motor bearings. A rattling sound can mean debris in the impeller or a pump that is starving for water.

Leaks around the pump. Water dripping from the pump body or the shaft area can signal a failed seal. Left alone, a leak can damage the motor.

Lost prime. If the pump basket never fills with water, or you see air bubbles in the lid, the pump may be drawing air through a loose lid, a cracked fitting or a low water level.

Humming without running. A motor that hums but will not spin can have a failed capacitor or a seized motor.

Tripped breakers. A pump that keeps tripping the breaker may have an electrical fault or a motor that is wearing out.

Weak flow. Weak return jets, even with a clean filter and baskets, can mean a damaged impeller or a clog in the lines.

Simple Checks Before You Call

Start with the basics. Make sure the water level reaches the middle of the skimmer opening, empty the skimmer and pump baskets, and confirm the filter pressure is normal. A clogged basket or low water level causes many pump complaints.

For safety, do not open the motor or work on wiring yourself. Electrical problems around water should be handled by a professional.

Repair or Upgrade?

Many pump problems, such as seals, capacitors and impellers, can be repaired. Our pool pump repair service finds the cause and explains your options before any work begins.

If your pump is old, noisy or keeps failing, replacing it with a variable speed model can be worth considering. Variable speed pumps run at lower speeds for longer periods, which tends to use less energy and run more quietly.
