Your filter catches the dirt, dust, leaves and oils that would otherwise cloud the water. As it does its job, it slowly fills up. A clogged filter cannot clean the water well, and it makes the pump work harder. Knowing when to clean it keeps your pool clear and your equipment healthy.
Watch the Pressure Gauge
Most filters have a pressure gauge on top. Right after a cleaning, note the reading. This is your clean starting pressure. As debris builds up, the pressure rises.
A common guideline is to clean the filter when the gauge reads about 8 to 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. Your filter manual may give a specific number for your model.
Other Signs Your Filter Needs Attention
Weak return flow, cloudy water that will not clear, or a pool that turns green despite good chlorine readings can all point to a dirty filter. After a windy week or a busy weekend of swimming, the filter may need cleaning sooner than usual.
If the filter needs cleaning far more often than it used to, or water stays cloudy right after cleaning, the filter media may be worn out. In that case, pool filter replacement may be the better fix.
Cleaning Methods by Filter Type
Cartridge filters are opened and the cartridges are rinsed thoroughly. Periodically they are soaked in a cleaning solution to remove oils and scale that rinsing leaves behind.
Sand filters are cleaned by backwashing, which reverses the flow to flush trapped dirt out. The sand itself is replaced every several years when it stops filtering well.
DE filters are backwashed or opened, and the grids are cleaned. Fresh DE powder is added afterward, and the grids are checked for tears.
How Often Thousand Oaks Pools Need It
Many residential filters need a full cleaning every few months, with extra attention after wind events, heavy rain or green water cleanups. Hard water in the area can also leave scale on cartridges and grids, which makes a deeper cleaning worthwhile.
